Go get you some vitamin D and I ain’t talking about that kind either lol. And if you do, make sure to check out this blog post for a heightened experience. 🙂 I am making reference to the sunshine vitamin better known as Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is a vital mineral that’s essential for making sure you get shit done (energy production), strong bones, skin health and making sure you aren’t too ill to party (immune health).
I am a Miami girl. So, that means palm trees, island food, melting pot of cultures, but most importantly great sunny weather. There’s something about sunny weather and how the rays of sunlight illuminates the city making it come to life. It makes you feel upbeat and vibrant. Theres a reason why summer is peoples favorite season. Ever notice how people get
We are sun beings, we thrive during the summer time all thanks to this miracle vitamin– Vitamin D!
Over the winter months, I’ve noticed how lack of sunlight has affected my energy and mental health. I reside in Tallahassee and if you’ve been here you know that its the only city within Florida that looks completely different than other parts of Florida: no beaches, the temperature can reach up to 20 degrees Celsius in the winter and no palm trees. The cold temperatures really did a number on my mood and I found it hard to function and muster the energy to do anything really.
Recently I got my vitamin D levels checked and I’m deficient. My levels were 25ng/ml which is really low. The optimal range is 40 to 59 ng/ml. No wonder I was so affected by seasonal depression.
Consider you might be Vitamin D deficient
It is said that 85 percent of the population is deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D can also help reduce the risk of other conditions as well, including type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation, age-related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness), and Alzheimer’s disease.
There are some ways to make sure you don’t become deficient in Vitamin D
- Get an ample amount of sunlight every day, about 10-30 minutes on your skin without the use of chemical sunscreen. Opt for
mineralsunscreen like the ones below.
- Eat a diet high in RAW foods.
- Supplement with D3. Check with your doctor about how much IU is best. I like this brand
Signs and symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency
- Bone softening
- Fatigue and generalized weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Joint pain
- Blood sugar issues
- Low immunity
- Low calcium levels in the blood
- Mood changes and irritability
- Weight gain
Other than not getting an adequate amount of sunlight a poor digestive symptom could be one reason you’re deficient in vitamin D. Gut health is critical and if your gut isn’t operating efficiently chances are you aren’t absorbing nutrients from your foods or supplements.
If Vitamin D levels go untreated it could lead to osteoporosis, diabetes, periodontal disease, major depressive disorder/SAD, cancer, multiple sclerosis.
Sun is important and should be embraced because it gives way to overall functional health in our bodies and MOOD!
