Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type

Your cleanser is indubitably one of the most necessary products you should prioritize in your skincare routine. Cleansers are made of alkaline base to remove pollution, debris, dirt, and oil from your skin. There are a variety of cleansing formulas on the market to meet your needs, however, what are you currently using? And most importantly, is it providing your skin the nourishment it needs?

Below we will explore the different skin types and the nourishment that it requires from a cleanser. 

NORMAL SKIN INDICATIONS

Normal skin type is well-balanced skin.

  • No or few imperfections.

  • No severe sensitivity.

  • Barely visible pores.

  • A radiant complexion.

What it needs: Adapt to what your skin needs at the moment

What to use: A gentle cleanser that cleanses away impurities without stripping the skin of moisture. Bonus: Look for a cleanser with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients. 

DRY INDICATIONS

“Dry” is used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum than normal skin. As a result of the lack of sebum, dry skin lacks the lipids that it needs to retain moisture.

  • A feeling of skin tightness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming.

  • Skin that feels and looks rough.

  • Itching (pruritus)

  • Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling.

  • Fine lines or cracks.

  • Gray, ashy skin.

  • Redness.

  • Deep cracks that may bleed.

What it needs: Moisture!

What to use: Cleansing oils, a creamy hydrating cleanser to replenish the skin with moisturizing ingredients and to rebuild the skin barrier. 

OILY INDICATIONS

“Oily” is used to describe a skin type with high sebum production.Oily skin has:

  • a shiny or greasy appearance.

  • very large or obvious pores on the skin.

  • skin that looks thick or rough.

  • occasional or persistent pimples.

  • clogged pores and blackheads.

What it needs: skin routine and lifestyle adjustments 

What to use: Oil cleanser and exfoliating cleanser. First with an oil cleanser, like attracts like. Therefore, the oil cleanser will remove dirt and debris without stripping the skin. Then, follow it up with a gentle cleanser or gentle enzyme/exfoliating cleanser to help remove build up, as well as unclog and minimize pores.

COMBINATION INDICATIONS

“Combination” skin is, consists of a mix of skin types. It can consist of:

  • an oily T-zone (forehead, chin and nose)

  • enlarged pores in this area perhaps with some impurities.

  • normal to dry cheeks.

What it needs: Duality! 

What to use: A different type of cleansing at different times of day. If you tend to be oily first thing in the morning opt for A gentle cleanser in the morning to absorb oil and a hydrating exfoliant based cleanser at night to replenish lost moisture or vice versa.
